THE AUDI TURBOCHARGED DIESEL ENGINE. ENGINEERED TO SQUEEZE EVERY OUNCE OF POWER OUT OF EVERY OUNCE OF FUEL.
Until that nirvanic day when cars run on water, automotive engineers constantly strive to design the perfect fuel-efficient automotive power plant-an engine that yields the maximum power from every drop of fuel that it receives.
Taking up the challenge, Audi engineers began with an engine that has already proven to be among the most fuel-efficient ever to power a full-sized car-the 5-cylinder Audi diesel. The task was to increase its power out-put without increasing its fuel in-take.
The answer: turbocharging.
In the case of the Audi diesel engine, it was found that turbocharging was able to boost power up to 30% on demand, by working off a power source
that doesn’t cost a cent: the engines exhaust gases.The exhaust gases spin a turbine wheel which forces additional fresh air (also free) into the cylinders.
The result is a power increase that can propel you from zero to 80 km/h in a snappy 10.1 seconds. Under normal driving conditions, the diesel simply operates in its normal economical manner.
Audi engineers also incorporated many advanced ideas to lengthen the life of the engine. To mention just a few: an additional oil cooling system sprays oil onto the bottom of each piston for extra cooling There is 40% more chrome on the upper piston rings for greater longevity. Also, a new metallurgical alloy is used throughout the cylinder head
assembly and valves to dissipate excessive heat more effectively.
This was the beginning of our efficiency story, but not the end.
Using the latest in high technology and the Audi bent for innovation, Audi engineers came up with the world’s first E-Mode automatic transmission-a smooth, 3-speed automatic with an additional “E” selection. Place the selector into “E” and the transmission automatically shifts into neutral when you take your foot off the accelerator. At highway speeds, this allows the engine to coast, reducing engine wear and conserving fuel.
The overall result is an engine that combines fuel-efficiency and longevity
with the spirited performance that today’s driving conditions demand.
Of course, besides the many technological advances of the Audi Turbo Diesel engine, one of its most attractive features is that it comes surrounded by one of the world’s most sophisticated and elegant automobiles.
