production of Tailored Finish
. The visual effect on this original  maple leaf design is
absolutely
stunning. The raised devices [images and lettering] are treated with a soft satin finish, while the background of the coin are designed with fine, straight lines running up at a 45-degree angle on Maple Leaf side and running down at a 45-degree angle on the Queen Elizabeth side. This creates a pyramid-like effect on the background, which deliberately looks like the unique architecture of the Winnipeg facility itself. The mint said of all the challenging coins they have minted, this one may have been the most challenging. As a matter of fact they were only able to strike about 20 of the Gold Coins per day because they were so labor intensive.
the planned mintage was 500 for the gold coin, but actual mintage is 400,

reason being of how difficult it was
to strike this Gold. The Silver too was not an easy task, which is why it has a mintage of 2,000 (Instead of 8000)

This is the second “W” Maple Leaf ever struck.
Lastly, due to the extreme difficulty in striking this new finish, the Winnipeg mint has stated they may not ever attempt it again.
