Description
"LANCEA REGIS"(the lance of the king)
- The first Hungarian c
oin, patinated 999 silver, with certificate in showing box
An accurate copy of St. Stephen’s first silver dénár coin. The original was likely minted by St. Stephen immediately after his coronation. It was found in a hoard with 40 silver dénárs attributed to St. Stephen in Nagyharsány in 1968.
Observe:
The front of the coin depicts a hand holding a lance, with a small flag bearing the text “LANCEA REGIS”. The lance was one of the symbols of royal power.
One of the original coins was loaned from the Hungarian National Museum for the purposes of minting the copy. The copy is certified with the mint mark of the Hungarian Mint Ltd., which is located to the side of the lance. The copy has patinated finish and is identical to the original in size and weight. It is made of pure silver, in contrast to the original which had a millesimal fineness of nearly 900. It has a regular edge thanks to the modern minting technology used, in contrast to the original coins, which had irregular edges.
Reverse:
The legend “REGIA CIVITAS” runs around a church on the back of the coin.
